Brave Change
Change is hard to make.
As powerfully reassuring as an eye into the future would be, none of us are endowed with one. It’s hard, but it’s part of the game. Just like a life lived without difficulty is without satisfaction, the ability to step into the future knowing exactly how your decisions will play out would take the necessary spice out of life.
Challenge is integral to our purpose and fulfillment.
That said, fear of the unknown is real and it can stop us from making any real changes at all. It’s so easy to lay back into complacency, safety and comfort and not change anything. Those temptations mischievously lead to a false sense of a life well lived.
In making big decisions or giant leaps of faith that launch you into an element of risk, the only thing you truly have to rely on is yourself. Trust that. If you don’t, build yourself up until you do. The only way you will know if you’re going the right way is to feel your way through the process. This requires action, which demands faith in yourself.
Notice where you want to mask your emotions with distraction, food or alcohol. Sit with discomfort instead. You don’t have to like what you feel. You don’t have to enjoy it. Your only job is to face what you would rather hide from.
Acknowledge your situation.
Breathe into it.
Hold it for a moment. It doesn’t have to be justified or labeled.
Suddenly, you will realize that you’re sad… and still okay.
You’re angry… and still okay.
You’re grieving… and still okay.
Or you’re happy… and still okay.
Happiness can be difficult for many people to hold too. Whatever it is you’re experiencing, whether that’s a single acute emotion or a confusing combination of many, stay with it. The intensity will not last forever.
The beauty of emotion is that it leaves when it’s given a voice. All it requires is presence in your experience to teach you what it needs. When it has had its time, you will feel it release.
The more you practice this process, the more you will trust in your ability to go through it. The less fear you have of facing emotional discomfort, the more courage you will have to move forward into the unknown, into big decisions and uncomfortable situations. Confidence is a practice. Self reliance is an art.
Change is always going to be uncomfortable. In order to step into your power and embrace it, you first have to face what it brings up inside of you. Feeling your way through life is braver than you think.
That’s exactly why most people don’t do it.
